These Fruits And Vegetables Are Fatal To Rabbits
Rabbits have unique digestive systems that need near-constant fiber intake to remain healthy. For a rabbit, a balanced diet contains hay, pellets, fresh fruit, and vegetables.
Avoid avocados at all costs!
Despite being a healthy snack for humans, avocados are unsafe to feed your rabbit. The skin, flesh, and even the leaves contain persin, which is toxic to most rodents. Feeding your rabbit avocado can cause behavior changes, difficulty breathing, and congestive heart failure.
Steer clear of onions and leeks!
Certain raw vegetables, including onions, leeks, and garlic, can cause oxidative damage in rabbits. When the body tries to get rid of the oxidant found in these foods, it will destroy red blood cells, causing anemia — fatal if not treated promptly!
The wrong types of lettuce?
Lettuce can be a great addition to the fresh portion of a rabbit's diet, as long as you make the right choice. Light-colored stems, such as those from iceberg lettuces, contain lactucarium, a chemical harmful to rabbits if ingested in large quantities. Other lettuces, such as romaine, green leaf, and red leaf, are safe to feed your rabbit.
Additionally, carrots, beets, and broccoli are fiber-rich, so you might think they're great fresh options for rabbit feeding. However, carrots and beets are high in sugar, so they're only suitable as occasional treats, and broccoli will give your bunny painful gas!
