Easy Tricks You Can Teach Your Rabbit
Rabbits are smart mammals that can learn basic tricks. As you train your rabbit, you'll bond with them and build loyalty. These simple tricks provide a foundation so you can move on to advanced techniques.
Come When You Call
Teach your rabbit to come when they're called so you can summon them from different rooms. This is particularly useful when you're having trouble finding them. Once your rabbit associates their name with treats, they'll come barrelling in whenever you call their name.
To start, say your rabbit's name while you're sitting next to them, then give them a treat. Repeat this process until your rabbit starts to realize that responding to their name results in a treat. Next, call your rabbit's name when you're not nearby. If they don't respond, repeat the previous step until your rabbit starts approaching you whenever you call their name.
Finally, call your rabbit periodically and stop giving them treats every time. Eventually, your rabbit will respond to their name even if you don't have a treat.
Give You a High Five
Getting your rabbit to touch your palm is a fun trick that also provides bonding time. Start by using a clicker and waiting for your rabbit to raise their paw. When they do, give them a click and a treat. You can lure your rabbit upward to encourage them to lift their paw.
Once your rabbit starts lifting their paw for a treat, hold up your hand. Give your rabbit a click and a treat when they touch your hand as they lower their paw. If they try to use both paws, keep your hand to the side so they can only use one.
Finally, start holding your hand in the air. Reward your rabbit whenever they touch your palm. Over time, you can phase out the clicker and treats as your rabbit memorizes the trick.
Spin in a Circle
For fun, you can teach your rabbit to spin in a circle. Start by holding a treat in your hand and luring your rabbit around in a circle, then giving them the treat when they complete the motion. Keep practicing until your rabbit follows the treat in a circle without extra help.
Next, lure the rabbit around in a circle without the treat. If your rabbit still expects a treat, repeat the previous step until they follow your hand automatically. Give them a treat when they complete the circle. As your rabbit learns the trick, start moving your hand faster so they get used to spinning around.
Finally, start moving your hand without giving your rabbit a treat. You can make the gesture shorter as your rabbit gradually learns to perform the trick on command.
