Can Bearded Dragons Live Together?

Bearded dragons look like majestic mini dragons. They're one of the more popular pet reptiles, as they tend to have gentle, inquisitive personalities. While they make amazing pets, they require quite a bit of care, and a lot of attention needs to go into their habitats. In the wild, bearded dragons are solitary creatures that enjoy having their own space. At home, the living arrangement can be a bit different if you have more than one bearded dragon.

Males should never be housed together, as they often have territorial streaks. Being in the same enclosure can lead to unnecessary aggression, as the males fight for dominance. This can lead to unnecessary stress that may cause your beloved reptiles to lose their appetite and experience stunted growth.

A pair of females will get along much better than a pair of males, and housing one male and one female together can also work if you're fine with them reproducing. While a couple might appear on good terms, there have been reports of sudden attacks that may lead to severe injuries and even amputations.

Size Matters

Gender is not the only thing that matters. The size of each bearded dragon can also influence the hierarchy inside the habitat, and a difference in size can lead to a fight for dominance as well. The larger dragon will often be better equipped to catch food.

And, more often than not, the larger one will take most of the food, and the smaller one will be left with little if anything at all. This is not only because of ability, but also because the larger dragon takes up more food resources to intimidate the smaller one.

If you're going to house two bearded dragons together, make sure they are roughly the same size.
