Easy Ways to Train a Puppy Not to Bite

Training your puppy to stop biting can be quite challenging. However, it is advisable to be patient and consistent with it. Below are invaluable tips to make the teaching process much easier.

React firmly to bites

Every time your puppy acts manic towards you, yelp and tell it off in a stern voice. Yelping makes it clear to your puppy that you are hurt, but you should be cautious not to over-stimulate it to bite harder. While this is utterly difficult, staying still if your puppy bites you is advisable. The calmness keeps the puppy from going full-on assault mode.

Time-out Technique

If your puppy bites you while playing, end the play session immediately. Then, gently place your puppy in its crate to calm down and prevent it from further biting. You can then walk away and ignore the puppy as a form of social isolation punishment.

Provide chew toys

If your puppy starts nibbling at your hand, offer it a toy instead. Substituting your hand with a toy redirects the puppy's attention from you and lets it learn what is acceptable to bite.

Use bitter spray

When your puppy still proves to get rough, spray a taste deterrent on your hands and clothes. If the pup bites you, stay still and wait for it to react to the taste deterrent. Once the puppy stops biting, reward it and continue playing.

A puppy class will allow your puppy to socialize with other dogs and pick up on good manners such as bite inhibition.
