4 Cat Breeds Great For Apartments

Some people consider cats an easy pet, but some breeds can be extremely energetic and need a lot of space. Here are four breeds with personalities suitable for living in an apartment.

Ragdoll

A very human-oriented cat, the Ragdoll's name comes from their tendency to completely relax when they are comfortable being held. With big blue eyes and pale coats, Ragdolls are a popular breed for their beauty and social natures. They love cuddling and often follow their owners around the house, and will befriend any other cats or dogs in their home. Although they grow to weigh up to 20 pounds, Ragdolls have low energy levels, but will still need short playtimes to keep them fit and healthy. Their coat needs to be brushed twice a week.

Birman

Birmans are known for being calm and affectionate lap cats who love to spend time with their owners. They can reach up to 14 pounds, with females being slightly smaller than males, and have long, silken fur with a ruff around their neck and blue eyes. Very sociable, Birmans do well with other pets and children in the home. If they don't have a companion to play with, you'll want to keep interactive toys on hand to keep them occupied and help them exercise. This breed is perfect for anyone who wants a cat that enjoys both belly rubs and playtime.

Persian

A gentle and docile cat breed, Persians love to spend their time napping on soft cushions or in the sunlight. The flat face and short muzzle of Persian cats is instantly recognizable, as is their long, thick fur, which is very fine and needs regular brushing. They typically weigh less than 12 pounds. If you have guests over often, a Persian might be perfect for you, as they aren't interested in climbing and jumping around the apartment. Many will find a high perch to watch the house. Because Persians need to be handled gently, they do best with older children, but they are friendly to everyone. Despite their lazy nature, Persians need regular playtime, but they make great lap cats.

Maine Coon

One of the oldest cat breeds native to the United States, this breed is known for their size, but Maine Coons do great in small apartments. They're sociable with children and other pets, and can weigh up to 20 pounds, making them easier for young children to handle. While laid back and able to be alone for part of the day, Maine Coons are talkative and affectionate, and enjoy being pet and cuddled. They also love playing with toys, both interactive and by themselves. Some Maine Coons can even be taught to walk on a leash, and they enjoy the stimulation and exercise the outdoors offers.
